So what are you waiting for? Let’s get started.

Top Facts About KTU University

APJ Abdul Kalam KTU University LogoThe main focus of this university to improve the academic standards of the Graduate, Post Graduate and Research Programmes in Engineering Science, Technology, and Management.

  • KTU University was established on May 21, 2014, through an ordinance by Government of Kerala, formulating the KTU Act 2015.
  • It was in 2015 when it KTU actually applied to colleges and started its first batch of students.

Aim & Vision

One of the greatest vision by KTU University had was to inculcate the outcome based education in colleges of Kerala. It generally means more knowledge through practical and experiment based studies.

This is a great initiative, but implementing this properly in our college will be the most difficult part.

But well… They are taking effort.

  • KTU University has its own official site (https://ktu.edu.in/home.htm) where it announces the new events, orders, and further announcements.

ktu-university-announcements

This site is to be followed by every KTU student throughout their college life, to keep track of new syllabus or exam schedule changes.

Cool fact… I would recommend you follow KTU Study on Facebook or Whatsapp to stay updated with the university announcements. You definitely should!

  • Unlike the previous Kerala university, KTU University has consistent feedbacks on faster and timely exam publication.

The area which tears students mentality is during KTU answer sheet assessment. It’s so much obfuscated, that we students don’t understand who evaluates the answer paper.

I will keep that talk separate for the next section.

This is where semester results from KTU after evaluation will be published.

KTU Syllabus

The A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU) wants to have the organic growth of its students and to learn towards the employability of the corporate world.

Several new courses have been introduced over the past years, to make the curriculum internationally acceptable.

New courses on Design Engineering, Sustainable Engineering, Life Skills, Business Economics, and Design Project for all branches were introduced in 2016.

Institutional Basic Rules (Attendance, Exams..etc)

  • The first point of contact for a student is his STAFF ADVISOR.

All subject branches have separate staff advisors. For example, Electronics and Communication Branches of the first year has one staff advisor which is mostly common to all divisions in the branch.

Computer Science will be having another staff advisor and so on.

  • Students should have 75% attendance in the course, Internal Assessment marks should be 45% or more to become ELIGIBLE TO WRITE the end semester examination. The minimum mark required to earn credit in the end semester exam is 45%.
  • The students who have failed in any course due to lack of eligibility can register for SUMMER COURSES provided the attendance in the regular course is above 50% and Internal Assessment marks were more than or equal to 35%.
  • The curriculum of any branch of the B.Tech programme is designed to have a minimum of 180 academic credits and 2 additional pass/fail credits, for the award of the degree. A student has to earn a MINIMUM 35 CREDITS out of 47 credits at the end of the second semester to be eligible to register for the courses offered in the third semester.
  • KTU University has introduced activity points to be earned by the students during their academic stay at the University covering extra-curricular and co-curricular activities. All students have to earn a minimum of 100 ACTIVITY POINTS from various activity segments.
  • The students may carry out INTERNSHIP or training in industries during the semester breaks. The students along with the faculty can identify nearby industries or work sites to undergo training. The internship activities will help students to improve their skills.
  • Students who want to initiate a START-UP venture or entrepreneurial activity, have to submit a project report, indicating the purpose, action plan, technical details, funding details, and future plans to the college Principal to avail one year BREAK OF STUDY.
  • E-governance platform of KTU helps students to obtain information relating to academics, examination etc.
  • Intercollege transfer facility after completing the first two semesters and Branch change facility after passing the first two semesters.
  • KTU features credit transfer facility from other University/Academic Institution

B.Tech Honors Programme

The introduction to B.Tech (Honors) programme gives an upper limit to students who are meritorious or excellent in studies and has the plan to learn deeply in a subject.

This is overall covered up by an end-exam, and a recognition certificate for passed students.

RULES FOR B.TECH (HONOURS) DEGREE

Not all KTU colleges offer this programme. They have limited it to institutions which have at least two NBA accreditation in B.Tech/ M.Tech programs and some more rules.

Expand Rules for B.Tech Honors

  1. Institutions having at least two NBA accredited B.Tech/M. Tech programs can offer B.Tech(Honours).
  2. The Program should have valid NBA accreditation at the time of registration of the student for B.Tech (Honours), in the fifth semester.
  3. The department concerned shall have at least one M.Tech in the concerned stream, for B.Tech (Honours) registration.
  4. Only Students having no credit arrears and a CGPA of 8 or above at the end of the fourth semester are eligible to register for B.Tech (Honours).
  5. After registering for the B.Tech (Honours) programme, if a student fails in any course he/she will not be eligible for B.Tech(Honours).
  6. They have to earn additional 12 credits to complete the B.Tech (Honours) programme by registering for courses, each having a minimum of 3 credits.
  7. Of these 12 credits, 6 credits are to be earned from M.Tech courses offered by the concerned department.
  8. Remaining credits can be earned by registering for any of the following courses:-
  • Additional B.Tech Elective courses (three credits each)
  • MOOC courses offered by reputed institutions/organization with the approval of University (three credits each)
  • Summer program/project offered by IITs or IISc ( 3 credits)

9. Online courses registered shall be certified ones with grading or marks or pass/fail

10. Prior to registration to MOOC courses, formal approval of the University based on the organization of the programme, syllabus coverage, detailed duration of the programme, nature of evaluation etc. is needed.

11. If the MOOC course is a pass/fail course without any grades, the grade to be assigned will be B+.

12. Any expense incurred for the MOOC course/Summer program should be met by the students.

KTU Evaluation System

I happened to witness one of the worst answer correction systems to be from KTU. It’s very inappropriate you know for someone one who has worked hard for the exam to know he failed.

Paying for the supplementary exam is okay. But do you think the student will wait for the re-evaluation results when he has the supplementary exam the very next week?

NO. He has to learn for the exam all from the beginning!

Our article on 5 Reasons how APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University could have been better will give you a better understanding of the same.

Credits System & Extracurricular activities

The credits system is what drives the students wrong. This is specifically because the KTU university has regulated credits as the grading system for passing a semester.

There are credits for every individual subject and the total you secured is what counts. You have to get the required amount KTU university tells you.

Keep in mind that credits and activity points are different.

You can additionally get credits/activity points from doing extra-curricular activities like internships, online courses, publishing patents and more.

In the course of 4 years of KTU B.Tech Engineering, A students must attain 2 credits or 100 points.

1 credit = 50 points.

KTU University Problems Existing?

First of all, We don’t complain about KTU University in any instances. These are just our suggestions.

  • The practical exam in colleges isn’t conducted by external staffs, which affects a lot in partial marking by teachers to its dear students.
  • Teaching academics take too much time and getting time for extra-activities is very less. Not really an outcome-based education.
  • The website KTU checks our answer paper on, is not hosted on its own server. This might lead to leakage of answer paper or its access by unwanted people if misused.

These are just my opinion. These really might not be a problem for you, but I just had to list those out of the way.

Again, To its positive side, we need to appreciate KTU university for its timely publishing of results and syllabus. It also maintains a good feedback on its current system.

Final words.

KTU University might not be the finest & best one.

But considering the changes it has brought about over the past 4 years, We must appreciate its change all over.
